Just 18 minutes from Marquette at Preston Park is a unique destination where you can learn about historical events in our North Texas community. Yes, we’re talking about the Farmers Branch Historical Park, a destination that welcomes over 100,000 visitors every year.
You’ll enjoy tours, stargazing events, and even music concerts.
Gilbert House: Cornerstone of the Farmers Branch Historical Park
Dating back to 1856, the Gilbert House is Dallas County’s oldest structure. Unbelievably, the house still sits on its original foundation. A dogtrot-style home, it features limestone walls, plank floors, and furniture handcrafted in Texas. Dr. Samuel and Julia Gilbert once lived in the house with their daughters. He was one of the area’s first physicians, and also farmed wheat, corn, and cotton.
Farmers Branch Railroad Depot & Caboose
In the early 1870s, Dr. Gilbert and other landowners granted rights-of-way through their land to the Dallas and Wichita Railway Company. The depot became the hub of the city. New residents, mail-order goods, and telegraph messages arrived daily. Today, the depot features artifacts that highlight the different modes of transportation in early Texas.
1900 Farmers Branch Historical Park Schoolhouse
Constructed between 1900 and 1910, the schoolhouse welcomes students between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The children sat at double desks and learned the basics in reading, writing, arithmetic, and history. The younger kids also cleaned the chalkboards, while the older students tended to the stove.
The Farmers Branch Mustangs is a vintage baseball team and take to the field in 1860s uniforms. They also follow old school rules and delight in showing everyone how the game has changed over the years.
All in all, the Farmers Branch Historical Park uniquely highlights the legacy of Dallas County. And, best of all, it’s one of several old-time attractions near our Plano apartments.
